The magnitudes and directions of principal stresses are determined at a location. An analogue symbol is generated that represents visually the magnitude and direction of each principal stress component by means of a magnitude descriptor and a direction descriptor respectively. The magnitude descriptor of one of the components — ideally the vertical stress component 'Sv' - comprises a planar geometric shape (e.g. a circle, ellipse or rectangle), some parameter of which (e.g. the diameter, area, perimeter or, axis or side length) may be proportional to the magnitude of the stress. The magnitude descriptor of one of the other components — ideally the maximum or minimum stress component 'SH' or 'Sh' - may comprise a line whose length and orientation correspond to the stress magnitude and direction. The symbols may further include visual uncertainty indicators associated with the magnitude and/or direction descriptor. The symbols are displayed and may be stored. |
