An apparatus and a method are provided for carrying out predetermined image processing on image data of an image comprised of a plurality of pixels. In the method a pixel is selected from the plurality of pixels of the image data in sequence, and is sequentially input; a plurality of different sampling criteria are applied to the input data of the selected pixel in sequence, in order to determine whether the selected pixel is a subject pixel; the input data of the selected pixel is sampled for each sampling criterion; feature amounts are obtained by applying a plurality of evaluation criteria using an appropriate set of sampled input data obtained from each of the plurality of different sampling criteria applied; a plurality of parameters are obtained according to the obtained feature amounts; and the image data is processed using at least one of the obtained parameters, thereby reproducing a converted image data.
