Monitoring system for a drive unit

The unit (34) has a process data link (38) at a process channel (28) to receive process data of a sensor unit (22) e.g. speed sensor. An adapter (40) is plugged into a receptacle (32) of a drive controller (14) and/or a receptacle (26) of the sensor unit to grip a parameter channel (30) and the process channel. A monitoring controller (36) evaluates control data and/or the process data to determine whether a safety-relevant condition of a drive (12) i.e. electric motor, and/or the sensor unit exists, and outputs a stopping signal to the drive controller based on the determination. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a monitoring method for a drive of a drive system (2) a method for retrofitting a drive system.
