PURPOSE: A reciprocating compressor is provided to improve the performance of a compressor by preventing the over-compression of refrigerant. CONSTITUTION: A reciprocating compressor comprises: a cylinder block which comprises a cylinder which compresses refrigerant; a valve plate(251) which comprises an outlet(251b) which is communicated with the compression space of the cylinder and is installed in the leading end surface of the cylinder block; a discharge valve(254) which is installed in the discharge side of the valve plate and opens/closes the outlet; a valve stopper(253) which is installed in the discharge side of the valve plate and comprises a valve guide(253a) wherein the discharge valve is inserted with being slid; a discharge cover which accommodates the discharge valve and the valve stopper, is installed in the discharge side of the valve plate, and includes a discharge space which accepts refrigerant which flows in through the outlet.
