<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for discriminating the material of a ballast filler which enables reliable discrimination of an asphalt-series filler from the filler of a ballast. Ž<P>SOLUTION: The method is provided for discrimination of the ballast 14 which includes a transformer 12 using the filler 11 containing PCB and a capacitor 13 containing the PCB. The method includes a heating furnace 21 which heats the ballast 14 and a hammering part 22 which performs a hammering test for the ballast of which the internal structure of the filler 11 is changed by being passed through the heating furnace. The hammering test is performed with a hammer 23 which the hammering part 22 has and thereby the material of the internal filler (asphalt-series filler or resin-series filler) is discriminated.
