The method involves presetting desired deflection of a control element (8) i.e. nozzle needle, from a quiescent position. Desired value is determined for preset reference variable of a control drive (12) depending on deflection. Preset amount of electricity is supplied to the drive depending on deflection. Temporal process of voltage resting against the drive is detected. Actual value of preset reference variable of drive is determined depending on process. The supplied electricity amount is varied depending on actual and desired values to minimize difference between the values. An independent claim is also included for a device for operating a control element, comprising a control drive.
