<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a proton conducting membrane composed of a polyarylene system copolymer excelling in ion conductivity, mechanical strength, heat resistant size stability and suppressing wrinkling in use. <P>SOLUTION: The proton conductive membrane is obtained by carrying out a biaxial stretching process on a polymer membrane containing 100 pts.mass of polyarylene system copolymer containing a fused aromatic ring structural unit expressed by formula (2) and a structural unit having a sulfonic acid group expressed by formula (13) and 20 to 50 pts.mass of organic solvent and then removing the organic solvent. In formula (2), A, D indicate direct coupling, one kind of structure selected from a group composed of -O-, -S-, -CO- and fluorenylidene group, B indicates atomic oxygen or sulfur atom, Ph indicates a binary group having a fused aromatic ring structure, R<SB>1</SB>to R<SB>20</SB>indicate one kind of atom or group selected from a group composed by hydrogen atom, fluorine atom, alkyl group, alkyl halide group, nitro group and nitrile group, etc. l, m indicate integral numbers from 0 to 4, q indicates an integral number that is 2 or more, t indicates an integral number from 0 to 4. n, p indicate a composition ratio of respective structural units.
