<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To perform area active driving having a large number of areas using a small number of light sources. Ž<P>SOLUTION: An optical shutter 20 formed by providing reflection type polarizing sheets 22 and 23 on both surfaces of a TN liquid crystal panel 21 is disposed between a liquid crystal display panel 10 and a backlight 30. Light transmission reflection characteristics of a shutter pixel is individually controlled according to an input video signal associated with one area of the shutter pixel of the optical shutter 20. Light reflected by the optical shutter 20 is transmitted through a scattering sheet 32 and a diffusion plate 33, reflected by a reflection sheet 34 and made incident in the optical shutter 20 again.
