<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To perform pattern recognition in a simplified mode. Ž<P>SOLUTION: This pattern recognition method successively performs a pattern detection step 2, a characterization step 3 of characterizing the pattern obtained in the pattern detection step 2, and a recognition step 4 of the pattern obtained in the characterization step 3, wherein the pattern characterization step is used to obtain invariant descriptors of a pattern D<SB>F</SB>(p, q) in a Fourier-Mellin space when M<SB>F</SB>(p, q) is considered as Fourier-Mellin transform of the pattern and p, q are considered as coefficients indicating invariant of the pattern corresponding to each of rotation and scale change.
