Use of 1,3-substituted imidazolium salts (I) to catalyze the unblocking of blocked isocyanates, is claimed. Use of 1,3-substituted imidazolium salts of formula (I) to catalyze the unblocking of blocked isocyanates, is claimed. R 1>, R 3>1-20C organic residue; either R 2>, R 4>, R 5>H or 1-20C organic residue; or R 4>+ R 5>aliphatic or aromatic ring; X : n-valent organic or inorganic anion; and n : 1-3. Independent claims are included for: (1) a coating composition comprising at least a blocked polyisocyanate, at least one oligomer or polymer having at least two isocyanate-reactive groups and (I); and (2) producing a coating comprising applying the coating composition on an uncoated or coated substrate and curing the coating at 100-300[deg] C.
