<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for controlling forging to prevent occurrence of a surface crack by establishing a simple method for predicting existence of occurrence of the surface crack on a material to be forged, when a forged article, e.g. shafting, is manufactured using a free hot forging press. Ž<P>SOLUTION: A method for predicting forging crack includes: a step S1 for obtaining breakdown data of the material to be forged by hot testing; a step S2 for identifying a breakdown threshold of the material to be forged using a breakdown conditional expression by obtaining stress when showing same value as the breakdown data by a deformation analysis of a test specimen of the hot testing; and a step S3 for calculating a breakdown parameter of the material to be forged by substituting the stress of the material to be forged obtained by a coupled thermal deformation analysis of the material to be forged in the free hot forging for the breakdown conditional expression. The occurrence of the forging crack in the free hot forging is predicted by using the method for predicting the forging crack, and press speed is controlled to prevent the forging crack, when the breakdown parameter becomes equal to or higher than the breakdown threshold.
