PURPOSE: A refrigerator and a control method thereof are provided to rapidly return the inner temperature of the refrigerator to a normal range after a refrigerator door is left open for a long time. CONSTITUTION: A refrigerator comprises a main body, a door, a door switch(110), a timer(120), a memory(160), and a controller(100). The door is rotatably provided for the main body. The door switch senses the state of the door. The timer adds up the time period during which the door opens. The memory stores predetermined time information corresponding to the time period added by the timer. The controller determines, based on the added time period, whether rapid cooling is needed and performs the rapid cooling in the main body during the predetermined time.
