<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a light-emitting diode high in reflectivity and high in reliability, and a backlight unit having the diode. <P>SOLUTION: The light-emitting diode is equipped with a light-emitting chip to generate light, a metal member on which the light-emitting chip is mounted, and a housing which is coupled with the metal member and fixes the metal member and in which an opening part to expose at least one part of the light-emitting chip and the metal member is formed. The metal member has a base metal layer, a light reflecting layer formed on a surface of the base metal layer, and a protective layer formed of metal on the surface of the light reflecting layer. By forming a metal protective layer of small thickness on the light reflecting layer high in the reflectivity, in this manner, while the reflectivity of a lead frame is maintained at a fixed level or more, occurrence of failures, such as, erosion and discoloration can be suppressed. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2010,JPO&INPIT |
