<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To control a blade angle to get the maximum propeller efficiency corresponding to a current area for running a marine vessel. Ž<P>SOLUTION: A propeller 13 is provided at a propeller shaft 11 driven by a main engine 12 with the blade angle variable. The blade angle of the propeller 13 is detected by a blade angle detection means of a blade angle changing mechanism 14, and torque applied to the propeller shaft 11 is detected by a shaft horsepower meter 17. Travel coefficient data corresponding to the blade angle, load and the number of rotation are stored in a travel coefficient data storage part 25, and the travel coefficient, that is a flow rate around the propeller is found based on the detected blade angle and load. The pitch data of the optimum blade angle stored in an optimum pitch data storage part 26 and the optimum blade angle in relation to the travel coefficient based on the detected blade angle are found, thus controlling the blade angle of the propeller 13 based on the optimum blade angle.
