PURPOSE: A tool damage detection method and apparatus for a machine tool are provided to prevent a sensing error by determining damage depending on current leakage regardless of connection between a tool and a workpiece. CONSTITUTION: A tool damage detection method for a machine tool as follows. A workpiece(M) is maintained in a ground state. Measurement voltage and reference voltage are outputted as constant voltage, and the measurement voltage is applied to each tool(T) of the machine tool. All the tools preliminarily contact with the workpiece so that the measurement voltage applied to the workpiece is dropped. The reference voltage is adjusted to be greater than the measurement voltage. During machining of the workpiece, when the measurement voltage higher than the reference voltage is indicates as damage of a tool.
