PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a projector for performing normal operation to a light source drive unit, even when a light source control unit controlling the light source drive unit generates erroneous operation or the like, and to provide a method of controlling the same. SOLUTION: When abnormal conditions occur in UART communication concerning part (for example, switching of above light emitting brightness or detection or the like of a lighting state) of operation controlled through the light source control unit 32 due to the UART communication out of operations performed by the light source drive unit 31 or when a state unable to normally control due to erroneous operation or the like of the light control unit 32 occurs, the projectors 1 switches over from GPIO 20d to direct control. Thus, an output port of GPIO 20d is connected for commanding switching of the light emitting brightness or detection of the lighting state to the light source drive unit 31.
