<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a sheet feeder enabling detection as to whether the front ends of sheets are accurately aligned to each other or not at a nip position between a pair of resist rollers when aligning the front ends abutting on the nip position between the pair of resist rollers. Ž<P>SOLUTION: The sheet feeder includes the pair of resist rollers on which the front ends of the sheets fed by a feed roller abut to be aligned to each other, a sheet detecting means arranged on the downstream side of the pair of resist rollers for detecting the front ends of the sheets fed by the pair of resist rollers, and a measuring means for measuring a time after the pair of resist rollers are driven but before the sheet detecting means detects the front ends of the sheets. In accordance with a value measured by the measuring means, the condition that the sheets are aligned by the pair of resist rollers is determined.
