An electronic blood pressure monitor determines whether the position of a measurement area is within an appropriate range or not (step (S10)), and provides notification of whether the position of the measurement area is within the appropriate range or not (steps (S12, S24)). In the case where the time when the position of the measurement area is within the appropriate range is determined to be a predetermined time (for instance, 2 seconds) or more, blood pressure measurement is automatically started (steps (S14, S16). In the case where the time when the position of the measurement area is out of the appropriate range is a predetermined time (for instance, 5 seconds) or more, blood pressure measurement is started (steps (S26, S30)). Furthermore, notification of whether the position of the measurement area was within the appropriate range or not is provided relating to the measurement results (steps (S22, S36).
