PURPOSE: A method for controlling a portable terminal is provided to perform selection or determination about all menus in a tree menu through one touch and drag action, thereby rapidly performing menu selection. CONSTITUTION: A portable terminal displays the top menu in a display device of a touch screen(S401). If touch input is performed in a fixed area, the portable terminal displays a menu corresponding to a touch spot(S402,S403). The portable terminal checks input of a following touch screen event in a touch state(S404). If the screen event is detected, the portable terminal performs an operation according to the corresponding touch related event(S405).
