The device has sensor arrangements (10, 10') arranged in a lateral corner area of a rear side of a vehicle (1) i.e. passenger car. A sensor arrangement detection region (12) has a lateral region extending in a vehicle longitudinal direction viewed at height of a front region of the vehicle. The arrangements detect fixed obstacles (O1, O2) arranged at a lateral edge of a roadway. The arrangements are connected to an evaluation device to sequentially determine a position of the detected obstacles relative to the vehicle and to recognize imminent collision between the vehicle and the obstacles. An independent claim is also included for a method for monitoring a vehicle surrounding.
