The method involves directly and/or indirectly injecting fuel into a combustion chamber of a cylinder. A combustion mixture in the combustion chamber is ignited by an ignition system to a preset ignition time point, where the ignition system is designed as Corona ignition system for igniting the mixture by producing non-thermal plasma and the ignition duration is arbitrarily adjustable. Electrical measured variables or an actuating variable of the Corona ignition system is evaluated for diagnosis of a combustion centroid during combustion.
