PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To solve the problem that a cleaning bias for cleaning the transfer roller deviates from a predetermined value due to discharging, to stain the rear surface, in an image forming apparatus that uses a transfer roller and a separating means for separating a recording material by use of the transfer roller and discharging. SOLUTION: The separating means for separating a recording material from an intermediate transfer body is supplied with a current required for separation only during the passage of the leading end of the recording material.
