The method involves providing a required ignition angle for operating an internal combustion engine (2). The internal combustion engine is controlled with a control ignition angle, which is based on the required ignition angle and a retarded ignition angle limiting value that defines an adjustable ignition point for maximum permissible irregular operation of the engine. An irregular operation measure is determined by the control angle, where the measure indicates irregular operation of the engine. The retarded value is corrected by the control angle based on the determined measure. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a device for correcting a retarded ignition angle limiting value for an internal combustion engine (2) a computer program comprising instructions executed by a data processing unit to perform a method for correcting a retarded ignition angle limiting value for an internal combustion engine.
