<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an electro-optical device having excellent reliability and high quality, wherein a water repellent material itself is not damaged due to a physical factor such as rubbing and sealing performance is not lost, and to provide a method for manufacturing the electro-optical device. Ž<P>SOLUTION: The electro-optical device 100 is configured by mutually sticking a pair of substrates 10, 20 through a seal material 52 having a frame-like shape in plane view and arranging a light-emitting element in an area surrounded by the seal material 52 between the pair of the substrates 10, 20. The seal material 52 is formed so that the outer side surface of the seal material 52 is located inside the side surfaces of the pair of the substrates 10, 20, the water repellent material 90 is formed so as to cover the outer side surface of the seal material 52, and the water repellent material 90 is arranged so that the outer side surface of the water repellent material 90 may be located inside the side surfaces of the pair of the substrates between the pair of the substrates.
