PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a surface-coated cutting tool having a hard coating layer exhibiting superior wear resistance in heavy cutting. SOLUTION: On a surface of a base of a cutting tool made of hard metal, cermet and cubic-boron-nitride-based ultra-high-pressure sintered compound, a compound nitride layer of Ti, Si and Mo satisfying a composition formula (Ti<SB>1-X-Y</SB>Si<SB>X</SB>Mo<SB>Y</SB>)N (where X and Y refer to 0.05-0.3 and 0.1-0.5 in atomic ratio, respectively) and having an average thickness of 1-10μm is formed by vapor deposition.
