The present invention relates to a variant-enriched FSH fraction with a basic isoelectric point and with highly branched and/or bisected carbohydrates. Said fraction may be purified from FSH samples produced using recombinant techniques or extracted from tissue or fluids of animal or human origin. Furthermore, the present invention comprises the preparation and use of the above-mentioned FSH fraction in animals and humans for the diagnosis and/or treatment of diseases, pathological conditions or reproductive states and, moreover, for managing fertility (contraceptive methods) and treating certain pathological conditions associated with abnormal, irregular, unexpected or undesired cell growth, such as neoplasias, tumours or cancer.
