PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a new chiral agent and a new ultraviolet absorber. SOLUTION: There is provided a compound expressed by general formula (1). In the general formula (1), * represents asymmetric carbon atom; L and L' are each independently a bivalent linking group; Rd is a site to cause oxidation-reduction reaction; B and B' are each independently a liquid-crystalline substituent; D is arylene, heteroarylene or a bivalent cyclic aliphatic hydrocarbon group; R is a substituent; x is 0 or 1; z is an integer of 0-3; w and n are each 0 or 1; and v is an integer of 0-5.
