<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a surface-coated cutting tool which is highly stable at high temperatures and has a prolonged tool service life by suppressing chipping at a cutting edge. Ž<P>SOLUTION: The surface-coated cutting tool includes a base material and a coating layer provided on a surface of the base material. The coating layer includes an alternate layer of one or more layers of an (A) layer and one or more layers of a (B) layer stacked alternately. The (A) layer is formed of nitride containing Al and Cr. The ratio of the number of Cr atoms is more than 0.05 and not more than 0.4 when the total number of metal atoms constituting the (A) layer is presumed to be 1. The (B) layer is formed of nitride containing Al and V.
