<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an absolute position detector for detecting an absolute position, capable of obtaining a precise linear output, especially by using a compact and simple configuration. Ž<P>SOLUTION: The detector includes: a magnet 3; and a magnetic sensor 2 equipped with GMR elements 6, 7 varying their electric resistance values in response to an external magnetic field from the magnet 3. The magnet 3 includes: a moving plane 3a to which the magnetic sensor 2 moves relatively so as to be spaced therefrom; and magnetized planes 4, 5 which are disposed on the both sides of the moving plane 3a intersecting perpendicularly with the relative movement direction of the magnetic sensor 2 and magnetized to be respective different magnetic poles. The width dimension of the moving plane 3a is configured to decrease gradually toward the relative movement direction, such that the overlap area of the GMR elements 6, 7 and the moving plane 3a is reduced gradually, when the magnetic sensor 2 moves from a start edge 15 to a dead end 16.
