The present invention relates to the use of monoolein-based cationic lipid systems for the complexation, transport and transfection of genetic material into target cells. The lipid systems are prepared by conjugating a neutral lipid, monooleoyl-rac glycerol (monoolein), with cationic surfactants derived from the dioctadecyldimethylammonium (DODAX) group, such as dioctadecyldimethylammonium bromide (DODAB), dioctadecyldimethylammonium chloride (DODAC) and dioctadecyldimethylammonium phosphate (DODAP). This lipofection method exhibits high levels of biocompatibility and reduced acquisition costs, and can be used for molecular biology research purposes (in vitro), as well as for gene therapy for medical purposes (in vivo). |
