<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To allow live view display of high quality and an AF of high precision to be performed regardless of a posture of an imaging apparatus. <P>SOLUTION: An imaging element 120 includes a rectangular image area, pixels are arranged so that the number of pixel columns arranged in a long side direction may exceed the number of pixel rows arranged in a short side direction, thinning read in a plurality of thinning read modes differing in combination of a long side direction thinning ratio to be thinning ratio in the long side direction and short side direction thinning ratio to be thinning ratio in the short side direction is allowed. A thinning read mode selection portion 102 selects any mode from among the plurality of thinning read modes of the imaging element 120 in accordance with a photography posture of a horizontal position and a vertical position detected by a photography posture detection portion 154 in performing thinning read by the imaging element 120.
