PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an organic EL element having high luminous efficiency, a low driving voltage, excellent thermal resistance and raw stock preservability, and a long life.

SOLUTION: The organic EL element in which a plurality of constituent layers including luminescent layers are held between an anode and a cathode has an electron transport layer containing at least one compound expressed by general formula (1). At least one of the luminescent layers contains a phosphorescent organometallic complex, and a metal or a metal compound of an element having a metal ion/metal-based standard electrode potential larger than -3Vvs.SHE, which is a group 1 element or a group 2 element, is contained in the cathode or the constituent layers in contact with the cathode electrode.
