PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an infrared light-emitting fluorescent material which has high emission intensity and also excellent water resistance while having an excitation wavelength and an emission wavelength nearly equal to those of a conventional molybdate-based infrared light-emitting fluorescent material. SOLUTION: The infrared light-emitting fluorescent material is represented by chemical formula: (Lu<SB>1-x-y</SB>Yb<SB>x</SB>Nd<SB>y</SB>)<SB>2</SB>O<SB>2</SB>S, wherein, x is ≥0.01 and ≤0.07; y is ≥0.003 and ≤0.06; and (y/x) is ≥1/6 and ≤5/3. The infrared light-emitting fluorescent material has high emission intensity and also excellent water resistance while having an excitation wavelength and an emission wavelength nearly equal to those of a conventional Na<SB>5</SB>(Yb, Nd)(MoO<SB>4</SB>)<SB>4</SB>fluorescent material.
