The method involves providing a rotatable circular knife (6) in a bread cutting machine, where the knife is moved between two end positions. The knife is attached to a linear slide. The knife is driven along a linear guide arranged below a guide channel (3) during cutting the bread in a direction of a side wall (14, 14') of a bread channel (5) perpendicular to a transport direction of the bread. The knife is moved to a base surface (13, 13') of the bread channel during cutting in an angle (19), where the base surface is moved in a direction of the side wall of the bread channel. An independent claim is also included for a device for performing a method for cutting a bread in a bread cutting machine.
