<p>Embodiments of the present techniques provide a backlight illumination system (73). The backlight illumination system (73) comprises a light source, such as fluorescent tubes (26) configured to emit light in all directions for illuminating a display. The backlight illumination system (73) further comprises a mirror (22) disposed behind the fluorescent tubes (26), wherein the mirror (22) includes beveled reflectors (28) configured to focus the emitted light forming a composite image of adjoining light sources, such as a virtual light source (30). The virtual light source (30) may reduce the number of fluorescent tubes (26) required for a backlit display, which may lower power requirements for the display. This may help to increase battery life in portable devices using such a backlit display.</p> |
