<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid amount detector which can enhance a detection accuracy of absolute quantity of liquid, especially with small and simple constitution. Ž<P>SOLUTION: A magnet 3 is provided at both sides of a moving surface 3a which a magnetic sensor 2 moves with keeping an interval and of the moving surface 2a which intersects perpendicularly with the moving direction of the magnetic sensor 2, and has a first magnetized surface 4 and a second magnetized surface 5 which are magnetized with different magnetic polarity. A magnetic sensor 2 is supported movably with linkage to the vertical movement of a liquid level 31a of the liquid 31 stored in a container. According to the movement of the magnetic sensor 2, the overlapping area between GMR elements 20, 21 and the moving surface 3a varies, a width dimension of the moving surface 3a is changing into the moving direction. The width dimension change of the moving surface 3a to the moving direction is imparted with the container shape dependence, and thus the absolute quantity of the liquid 31 is detectable based on electrical characteristics change of the GMR elements.
