PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To properly control a balance between search time and write/read performance according to the purpose of backup when data is backed up on a magnetic tape. SOLUTION: A disk array device 100 includes a disk device 120 having a hard disk 121; a magnetic tape device 140 having a magnetic tape 143 to which data is written for backing up the data; and a control unit 110 which writes and reads the data between the disk device 120 and the magnetic tape device 140. The control unit 110 includes an FM interval managing unit 540 which accepts the purpose of use when the data is backed up on the magnetic tape 143; from FM intervals indicating the recording intervals on the magnetic tape 143 of file marks (FM) held in accordance with the purpose of use accepted, obtains the FM intervals corresponding to information on the kind of backup accepted; and sends the FM intervals obtained to the control unit 110.
