The method involves providing a characteristic line (52), in which first and second levels (O, 54) are assigned to first and second values (A, 60) for measured variables i.e. electrical resistance. Another characteristic line (42) is formed by stretchings (62) of the former characteristic line. A third level (48) larger than a nominal value is assigned to a third value (46) for the measured variables. The third level is determined based on the latter characteristic line and the third value. An independent claim is also included for a measuring device for determining filling conditions of a liquid in a tank of a motor vehicle.
