[Class 79 (v)] [Also in Group XXV] A pitman arm drag link has a boss at one end for attachment to the steering box and a tubular housing in spaced offset relationship at the other end in which are located a pair of closely spaced ball studs, the shanks of which project through a slot in the housing and are secured to tie rods whose other ends are secured to the steering arms, thus eliminating the usual drag link and track rod. The layout is particularly suitable for vehicles having independently sprung steering wheels. The pitman arm 12 has a boss 10 at one end and a transverse tubular housing 11 at its other end containing, ball studs 20 connected via conventional tie-rods 24 and studs 25 to the steering arms of the wheels. The ball studs 20 are located between four seating members 16, two of which are placed together between the two ball studs, and are maintained in contact with the ball studs by compression springs 21 which are located on tubular supports 22. The supports 22 also act as stops to prevent the ball studs from moving too far along the tube whereby one might drop out of the end of the slot 11c which is of keyhole shape with its enlarged end big enough to permit passage of a ball stud during assembly. A grease nipple 23 may be provided and the seating members 16 may each be drilled as at 16c for lubrication purposes. The slot 11c may have a felt-lined dust cover 27. In alternative forms, not shown, the arm 12 may be connected to the tubular housing 11 at one end of the latter, or in the layout shown in Fig. 1, the arm 12 instead of being integral with the tubular housing 11 may be secured thereto by a clamp. |
