摘要 The therapeutic use of plant products is increasingly important for cancer research because many conventional chemotherapeutic drugs used in cancer treatment have been developed from botanical sources. The use of botanical products in the system of drug development involves the identification and extraction of active components from plants or crude extracts. The present invention relates not only to the in vitro and in vivo antitumor potential that hexanic fractions from gymnosperma glutinosum extracts has against the murine lymhoma L5178Y, but also demonstrates that the cytotoxic activity is due to the phenomenon of apoptosis; in addition, the invention relates to the chemical characterization of compounds with antitumor activity where it was found that such an activity was due to the presence of long linear alkane chains with aromatic ring compounds and possible flavonoids identified by mass spectrometry. We observed in vitro cytotoxic activity of about 43% of the active extracts a nd fractions of gymnosperma glutinosum against tumor cell line L5178Y; by DNA fragmentation analysis it was demonstrated that the antitumor activity was due to the phenomenon of cell death by apoptosis after 12h of treatment. Furthermore, it was demonstrated that intravenous administration of the hexane fraction of these extracts significantly increased the survival of mice inoculated with L5178Y lymphoma and an equally significant reduction of tumor weights, which can be a positive indication of pre-clinical value.
