<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent improper operation by detecting any abnormality by other electronic control units when re-writing a control program stored in one of a plurality of electronic control units connected to each other via a communication line. <P>SOLUTION: An electronic control unit 10 for rewriting stops the self diagnosis and stops the transmission of the result of the self diagnosis based on the write start requesting signal from an external tool 20. Electronic control units 12, 14 for non-rewriting stop the self diagnosis and stops the transmission of the result of the self diagnosis based on the write start request signal from the external tool 20 and the self diagnosis stop requesting signal from the electronic control unit for rewriting, or the self diagnosis stop requesting signal from the electronic control unit for rewriting, and the self diagnosis result transmission stop signal from other electronic control units for non-rewriting.
