877,655. Operating mechanisms for automatic couplings. NATIONAL MALLEABLE & STEEL CASTINGS CO. June 8, 1959 [June 9, 1958], No. 19484/59. Class 103(5). An automatic railway vehicle coupler if pulled out during operation may be prevented from dropping to the track by the mating coupler which is retained locked thereto by the non operation of a rotor shaft member controlling the lock In the pulled out position, Fig. 2, the upper surface 24a, Figs. 7 and 8 of the rotor 16 is engaged by the J hook 14 of the uncoupling rod 5, but as this surface is below or level with the rotary axis of the shank 18 then the rotor cannot be turned to unlock the couplers by the eccentric forces exerted in the Fig. 2 position. The eye 20 of the rotor is provided with a relatively weak wall section 30 so that continued movement of a pulled out coupler will cause the J hook 14 to break through the wall 30 and render the rotor unsuitable for re-use. The pulled out coupler will then remain locked to and be carried by the mating coupler. |
