The invention relates to a suture of non-absorbable material such as silk, nylon, polyester, polypropylene or cotton, or of bioabsorbable material such as polymers and copolymers of glycolic and lactic acid, comprising at least one series of exterior barbs (16, 86, 94, 98, 106), provided for gripping of tissue in one direction only, and a leading end (10a), wherein the barbs (16, 86, 94, 98,106) permit movement of the suture (10; 10d; 32a, 32b; 34a, 34b; 36a, 36b; 38a, 38b; 40a, 40b; 55, 60, 73a, 73b, 73i ..., 84a; 96; 102) through tissue in the direction of the leading end (10a), wherein the suture is adapted to hold a patient's tissue in which the suture is inserted as well as to bring together and hold closed an open wound in human or animal flesh to allow healing and regrowth together of two sides of the wound and wherein the barbs (16, 86, 94, 98, 106) have a depth from about 30 to about 100 microns. |
