Classes 64(1) and 123(2) A steam or hot-water boiler comprises a firebox 2 having walls lined with watertubes, a tank 1 having vertical smoke tubes, and a flue 3 located between the combustion chamber and the tank and conveying hot gases from the former to the smoke tubes. The wall 4 separating the firebox 2 and flue 3 comprises spaced water tubes and intermediate plates or fins which close the gaps except in the upper part. The water tubes are connected to bottom and top tubular headers 16, 17 which are connected to the tank and to vertical return tubes 8 at the front. In a modification in which the firebox has a burner at the top from which the gases flow downwardly, a second flue is provided between the firebox and tank, and a superheater and evaporator are located in the flues.
