In the production of monofilaments from polyvinyl chloride, vinyl chloride/vinyl acetate copolymers, vinyl chloride/vinylidene chloride copolymers or mixtures of these polymers, there is added to the polymer or polymer mixture 0,5-40% preferably 4-10%, based on the weight of the vinyl polymer or polymer mixture, of a polymer of ethylene or a copolymer of ethylene based on a major proportion of ethylene, which polymer or copolymer is incompatible with the vinyl polymer or polymer mixture. Incompatible polymers form when mixed on a heated two roll mill a sheeted product which is cloudy when compared with similar sheets made by milling the individual polymers. In an example, 15 parts (by weight) of vinyl chloride (98%) / vinyl acetate copolymer, 81,5 parts of vinyl chloride (90%)/vinyl acetate copolymer, 6 parts of polyethylene of density 0,92 at 23 DEG C. and melt flow index 2,0 (B.S. 2782), and 2.5 parts of dibutyl tin dilaurate (as stabilizer) are mixed and melt-spun at about 180 DEG C. to form monofilaments which are cooled to 80-100 DEG C. in a water bath and stretched to 300% of their original length. The monofilaments can be flagged either before or after filling into brushes by subjecting their ends to repeated blows. Copolymers of ethylene with another alpha-olefine such as polypropylene may be used.
