PURPOSE: A display device and a method for controlling the brightness of images in a display device are provided to improve image quality by controlling the brightness of back light control and a contrast. CONSTITUTION: A display device comprises a display panel, a gate driver, and a data drive. A luminance output unit(120) receives first image data. The luminance output unit produces a first brightness average value. The brightness regulation part(130) compares the second brightness average value of the second image data and the first brightness average value. The brightness regulation unit presently the back light brightness value and a contrast control value. The backlight driver(140) controls a driving signal of a current back light unit. The contrast control unit(160) controls the contrast of first image data.
