PURPOSE: An EGR(Exhaust Gas Recirculation) device and a driving method thereof are provided to maximize the efficiency of the device by recirculating exhaust gas to an EGR cooler through a vacuum bypass valve except for an operating area with high possibility of soot generation. CONSTITUTION: An EGR device comprises an exhaust gas cooler, a first signal processing part, and a vacuum bypass valve(20). The exhaust gas cooler is composed of an EGR cooler of U-flow type and a second EGR cooler of I-flow type. The first signal processing part outputs a signal indicating a driving area with high possibility of soot generation in exhaust gas based on target air amount, engine rpm and target fuel amount. In case the signal is outputted from the first signal processing part, the vacuum bypass valve circulates exhaust gas to a second EGR cooler. In case no signal is outputted, the vacuum bypass valve circulates exhaust gas to a first EGR cooler.
