PURPOSE: A method and an apparatus for controlling a variable valve of an internal combustion engine are provided to secure stable control of cam phase regardless of oil temperature by applying PID(Proportional Integral Differential) sliding mold control logic to a clutch type electronic variable valve device. CONSTITUTION: A method for controlling a variable valve of an internal combustion engine comprises the steps of: setting a target cam phase according to the current driving condition through a vehicle controller and CAN communication(S101), detecting a cam phase and determining whether the deviation from the target cam phase is over the reference deviation(S103), if the cam phase difference is over the reference deviation, setting a PID sliding plane(S104), calculating control current to follow up the target cam phase(S107), converting the control current into a driving duty ratio(S108), and driving a variable valve device to follow up the target cam phase(S110).
