<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a sewing machine including a threader unit that allows a needle thread to be reliably held by a thread holder during threading operation carried out by a user in relatively simple configuration. Ž<P>SOLUTION: To execute threading operation with the threader unit 11 for passing the needle thread T through an eye of a sewing needle 7, the user performs the preparatory steps as follows. The needle thread T is drawn from a needle thread spool to engage the needle thread with a thread tensioner and thread take-up, then, needle thread is engaged with needle bar thread guide 21 of needle bar 6 to be thereafter held through engagement with thread guide member 26 of threader mechanism 24. Then, needle thread is passed between a guide plate 34 of a thread holder 27 and a thread holding plate 35. Finally, the needle thread is passed through a threading groove of a passage resistance applying mechanism 38, and the tip of the needle thread is cut off to an appropriate length by a thread cutting member. The passage resistance applying mechanism 38 includes a cover 39 provided with projection, a tension plate, and a coil spring within the threading groove. The passage resistance applier applies a predetermined resistance on the needle thread T when the needle thread T is passed through it to cause needle thread T to be introduced to the inner peripheral side of the thread holding plate 35 of the thread holder 27.
