PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a fuel oil composition that significantly enlarges a CAI combustion range of a controlled auto-ignition engine equipped with a reformer that reforms a fuel oil composition to a reformed fuel oil composition by dehydrogenating the fuel oil composition using a dehydrogenation catalyst and also achieves improved thermal efficiency and reduced CO<SB>2</SB>emission. SOLUTION: The fuel oil composition for a controlled auto-ignition engine has a sulfur content of 10 mass ppm or less, a 90% distillation temperature of 220°C or lower, a research octane number of 70 or less, and density at 15°C of 0.840 g/cm<SP>3</SP>or less and contains at least naphthene. An octane number of the reformed fuel oil composition is preferably higher than the octane number of the fuel oil composition before reforming in the reformer by 20 or more.
